Beyond Volume: Sillage and Projection (or the Art of Being Remembered)

In the world of fragrances, there is a paradox: some shout to be heard, while others whisper and capture the attention of an entire room. We often hear about "sillage" as if it were the only measure of value, but reality is more subtle.

At Devertere, working exclusively with Extrait de Parfum, we have chosen a different path: that of magnetic presence. But what is the difference between leaving a mark and invading someone else’s space?

Projection vs. Sillage: A Matter of Distance

To understand how your fragrance behaves once sprayed, we need to distinguish two technical concepts:

  1. Projection: This is the “range” of the fragrance when you are still. It’s how much the scent expands around you. A highly alcoholic Eau de Toilette may have explosive projection in the first ten minutes, only to vanish shortly after.

  2. Sillage (or Trail): This is the olfactory imprint you leave behind as you move. It’s the soul of the perfume lingering in the air of a hallway or a room after you’ve gone. It’s the memory of your passage.

The Invisible Engine: The Role of Alcohol in Sillage

Why are Devertere Extraits different? Thanks to their high concentration of essential oils and reduced alcohol content, their projection is often more contained and “polite” compared to commercial perfumes loaded with volatile synthetic molecules.

To understand why an Extrait de Parfum behaves differently from an Eau de Toilette, we must look at alcohol not as a simple diluent, but as a carrier.

Alcohol is extremely volatile: it evaporates quickly as soon as it touches the skin. In its upward escape, it carries the scent molecules with it, projecting them into the surrounding space.

  • In lighter concentrations (eau de toilette/eau de parfum): The massive presence of alcohol creates an initial “explosion.” The fragrance is projected far and immediately, creating a wide trail but often short-lived. It’s a firework: dazzling, but quick to fade.

  • In Extrait de Parfum (Devertere): Here, the percentage of alcohol is reduced to the minimum necessary to keep the formula fluid. With less alcohol “pushing” the molecules outward, projection is more controlled and closer to the body.

Why is this an advantage for those who choose Devertere?

The magic happens over time. Since there is less alcohol forcing immediate evaporation, the precious molecules (like the brandy in JUST FOR ONE DAY or the oud in OUDONISM) stay anchored to the skin, releasing slowly thanks to body heat.

The result is a dense sillage: the trail is not a cloud of alcoholic vapor that dissipates, but a persistent presence. If an Eau de Toilette is a shout lost in the wind, the Extrait is an intense conversation that lasts for hours.

In summary:

  • More alcohol = Immediate and strong projection, but volatile sillage (it evaporates quickly).

  • Less alcohol (Extrait) = Intimate projection and deep sillage (notes remain heavier and present in the air longer).

Managing Your “Olfactory Shadow”

Choosing an Extrait means preferring the quality of the trace over the quantity of noise.

  • If you’re looking for a trail that evokes speed and asphalt, SUEDEXCESS will leave behind a sharp, technical memory.

  • If you prefer a more intimate projection that invites closeness, the complex sweetness of THE WAY YOU KISS ME will perform flawlessly at close range.

Leaving a mark doesn’t mean occupying all the space, but ensuring that once you leave, your absence still carries a scent.

"True sillage is not a shout. It is the echo of a presence that doesn’t need to demand space to be remembered."
